5 Myths about Shopify’s Plus design limitations


A highly trusted ecommerce platform, Shopify Plus is used throughout the world. Unlike other Shopify versions, Shopify Plus is designed specifically for large businesses. Shopify Plus currently has more than 7000 brands on it, and approximately 10,900 checkouts occur each minute. Once you finish reading this article, there will be 65,866 orders from the Shopify sites. How crazy is that? 

But in the past, Shopify Plus has been blamed for lacking flexibility when it comes to design.  In reality, merchants have a great deal of design freedom thanks to the e-commerce platform. Our goal today is to demystify some myths about Shopify Plus. Let’s see what they are.

#1 With Shopify Plus, every Shopify store looks the same since you have to use a pre-existing template.

Our opinion

One of the most common misconceptions about Shopify Plus is that pre-existing templates are required to use as a merchant. That isn’t quite true. We build Shopify Plus stores from scratch (which means we don’t use pre-designed templates). As a merchant, you can choose:

  • From the Shopify theme store, install an independent template (free or paid).
  • If you want to customize it, then use a template and have a Shopify agency add to it (but remember that templates are not designed to have more features than they have) .

For some brands, making this choice might be difficult – but the option exists. A custom theme is a good choice if conversions and brand image are most important.

#2 With Shopify Plus, there are fewer options for custom sections.

Our opinion

It’s not true. Your store can be more flexible in the way it uses and structures sections if it has a custom design. Also, you can design any section you want, right from the beginning. You can then modify it exactly to what you need.

Imagine a carousel of images. Pre-existing templates can have rigid formats when these are offered. There may be a set height and a fixed alignment for the text. But if you create it yourself, you’d have complete control. You can customize it for desktop and mobile, add video and animations, etc.

You can choose whatever sections you use in your store by going custom. That’s what makes a custom design so desirable.

#3 Shopify Plus is best suited for simple e-commerce businesses without a very complex content management system.

 Our opinion

In Shopify Plus, many people complain that dynamic sections (using which you can change the content layout of your pages) are only available on the homepage.As a result, people may think the platform isn’t designed for content-driven companies needing to customize beyond their homepage. There are, however,  third-party apps that can help brands build pages and showcase their content throughout their stores. 

# 4 Shopify Plus does not allow you to change your store’s checkout design.

Our opinion

It is possible.The ‘checkout liquid’ file allows Shopify Plus users to customize their checkout page further than what’s possible in the theme editor (what you use otherwise). 

When you edit this file, you can completely change the way your checkout looks to ensure your store’s identity is consistent. For example, on Shopify Plus, you can customize (colors, fonts, logos, images) and edit checkout fields as needed.

# Myth 5 All these apps are going to be hard to use, and they won’t look good.

Our Opinion

Almost any functionality you want to add to your Shopify store can be added through an app. Do you have other options? Probably not. If so, will you be limited to the default appearance of the app? Not at all.To extend your store’s functionality without damaging your branding, you can do the following:

  • Develop a custom theme.This option gives you complete control over the functionality and lets you customise it exactly as you like. 
  • You can customise a third-party App.There are an incredible number of apps you can use with Shopify. It’s likely that if you choose to use these, you’ll be able to customise the UI to fit seamlessly with your store’s look.
  • Consider using a ‘Private App’ In addition, some features can best be provided through private apps as a preexisting integration or plugin simply does not exist for the merchant’s specific needs. The private app feature allows you to access any database via an API and send and retrieve data.
